Defending champion Paul Casey and six-time winner Ernie Els reached the second round of the World Match Play Championship at Wentworth on Thursday.

Top-seed Casey beat Jerry Kelly 3 and 2. Els defeated Colin Montgomerie 6 and 5. U.S. Open champion Angel Cabrera had 11 birdies to beat Retief Goosen 6 and 5.

"There will be a lot of soul-searching as to why I'm playing well and couldn't produce it today," said Harrington, the British Open champion who bogeyed three of the first five holes. "Losing in the first round is very disappointing because I was thinking of going all the way."

Two matches did not finish because of a two-hour fog delay in the morning.
