Not that it's any surprise, but it looks like John Daly could finally be ranked at the top....of the list of "Worst Conditioned Athletes in Professional Sports. John Daly has been quoted as saying that he dislikes weight training...because the weights are just so darn heavy. If JD doesn't die on the course with a cigarette in his mouth I'd be shocked....so crack open another beer and check out the Fox Sports article here... http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7128994?MSNHPHCP>1=10437

Nike's New SQ Sumo Irons
The Nike SQ Sumo irons will be hitting stores near you on November 1.
"We have taken the premise of geometry that we started with in the original Nike SQ driver and are evolving it across our club line," said Tom Stites, director of club creation for Nike Golf, in a media release. "With this new geometry and its high MOI, we have created what we believe is the most forgiving iron Nike Golf has ever developed."
With extreme perimeter weighting, the SQ Sumo irons have an ultra thin Cryo Steel face plate on the 4-7 irons to increase distance and make them more forgiving. The SQ Sumo irons also have a polymer insert to reduce vibrations at impact and improve feel.
The clubs feel extremely solid at impact, even on shots that were mis-hit, and getting the ball up and flying high was very easy. After hitting several 7-iron shots, I noticed that I was hitting 10 to 15 yards farther — and much higher — than I usually do. So for players looking for maximum game improvement, the SQ Sumos seem worth trying out.
The Men's set will include 4-iron to pitching wedge and cost $799 for steel shafts and $999 for graphite shafts. The women's set, made up of 5-iron to sand wedge in graphite only, is $999.
(article from Golf.com)Honestly, I don't see Tiger playing these clubs anytime in the near future, but they sure look like a solid club that would be excellent for mid to high handicappers, but also for single digit players. The topline doesn't look too bulky, and according to the article, they have a thin face for great feel. I can't wait to personally try these out. Post a comment and let everyone know what you think about these new irons. Check out these irons at Shop golfgalaxy.com

Embarassing Golf Moments

The other day I was thinking about how embarrassing golf can be at times, and wanted to see some embarrassing PGA moments. I found this great article after a little search...enjoy.
Golf is a game of failure. Only one player prevails every tournament. The rest, in some sense, fail. So the game's history is chock-full of mistakes, poor shots, bad choices and embarrassing moments. Sam Snead never won a U.S. Open but he lost one when he made an 8 on the final hole. Arnold Palmer lost a Masters he thought he had won -- a friend called him over to the ropes to congratulate him as he walked up the 18th fairway -- when he skulled one out of the greenside bunker and made a double bogey on the 72nd hole. Ed Sneed lost a lead on the back nine at Augusta, memorably looking ........(continued)

The Country Club Attitude?
I had an experience at my club a few weeks back that made me question the "country club lifestyle" and wonder if it's really all it's cracked up to be. I'm lucky enough to live right on the course where I'm member, so it's hard to complain about the convenience it provides, but one evening, while out practicing before dark, I had a run in with another member that left me slightly ticked off, to say the least.
My club doesn't have a full driving range, just a netted area with mats, so if you want to actually practice hitting off grass, you have to do it on the course. So I'm out minding my own business on hole 10, hitting a few approach shots from about 130 yards, when I hear a voice from the houses that line the fairway. "This is not a driving range" the voice yells. I look up to see some guy standing on his back patio, with his hands on his hips, looking down at me. Slightly shocked, I reply back "What?"...to which he says again "This is not a driving range you know"...
I yelled back up to him that I understand this isn't a driving range and for him to mind his own business. So I went back to what I was doing and walked up to the green and retrieved my 3 balls, fixing my pitch marks in the process. Now I understand that if I had dropped a shag bag full of balls in the fairway and proceeded to tear the course to shreds, that this guy would have some right to yell at me, but where in the Club rule book does it say that you can't hit 3 balls from the fairway??...Oh that's right, it doesn't because I checked. Heck, a normal foursome will do more damage to a fairway than I ever would with my couple practice shots.
....so I continue on my way, do a little chipping around the green, some putting etc. all the while, Mr. Course Monitor is watching the situation with a stern eye...I stare back at him and finish my practice and leave....
I knew the address of that house so I went home and tried to find this guy in the club directory, just to see if he was member, and he was..which brings me to the point of this story; First off...was I wrong in what I was doing on the course? Nothing is mentioned about hitting a few balls for practice. And secondly, does this angry member have the right to yell at another member for what he perceived to be some infraction of club rules. Was this guy entitled to have the "Country Club Attitude", just because he's been a member for half a century, or should mind his own business and take it up with the club board if he believes an impropriety has occured?
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy being a member at my club, but I treat everyone with the respect they deserve. I would never think to outwardly yell at another member for anything, let alone, something as harmless as practicing their golf game in a benign manner. After all, if I wanted to get yelled at for something golf related...I'd just go home!

How to Get a Single Digit Handicap??
So you've been playing golf for a few years and you just can't seem to get your scores down. You've taken the lessons, bought the latest, greatest huge headed driver, and every DVD you could find, and banged balls at the range until your hands bled. The answer to getting a single digit handicap is something you've already known since you started golf...SHORT GAME!
70/30......Spend 70 percent of your practice time on the putting green and chipping area the other 30% on the full swing. Find a club that you are comfortable with around the greens, PW, SW, LW, it doesn't matter, it just has to feel good. Chip from every distance and lie you can find. Get the feel ingrained into memory. Do the same with putting...but MAKE IT FUN. If you'renot having a good time practicing, you won't want to do it, and you won't get any better.
NO Penalty Strokes...Nothing kills your score like unnecessary penalty strokes. This means you should do whatever you have to to avoid hitting the ball Out of Bounds or in that lateral water hazard. Usually this means putting the driver back in the bag on that tight Par 4, and opting for a 5 wood, hybird, or even a 5 iron. Get the ball out there, in play, and go from there. Even if you can't make the green in two because you lost some distance off the tee, just get up close to the green and you're a chip and a putt from a par. Worst case you'll make bogey, which is much better than blasting one OB off the tee and and making a nice 7 on a par 4. Good decisions like this make the difference between a round in the low 80's and a round in the low 90's.
Take More Club...Most of us amateurs make the mistake of not taking enough club for our approach shots. By this I mean that if you have 160 yards to the pin, you'll take out your 7 iron, which you will hit 160, if you absolutely pure it, which doesn't happen but 1 out of 20 shots. Instead, take the 6 iron, and put a nice, controlled swing on it. Chances are you will hit a nice shot, on or very near the green. If you happen to hit the shot of your life, you'll be a little long. The point is, give yourself a chance to get on the green in regulation by taking that extra club. You'll be putting for birdie a lot more if you do this.
More to come......
