Club of the week...My Scotty Cameron putter!

This weeks "Club of the Week" is my Scotty Cameron Studio Stainless 2.5 putter. I decided to feature one of my own clubs this week mainly because it's the best club I've ever owned....and for me to say that about a putter is unbelievable.

I used so many putters of the years I can't even count them all, but I always wanted a Scotty Cameron putter. In my mind, I could never justify spending $300+ on a Scotty Cameron, but one day, on a whim, I found this beauty on Ebay, and it's been a match made in heaven. I went so far as to buy this putter without ever having putted with a Scotty Cameron putter...I was just intrigued by them for the longest time, and luckily...it was a good match.

Think about it..we all spend hundreds of bucks on the newest, baddest driver on the market, and we used it a dozen or so times per round...but the idea of spending $300 on a putter seems crazy, even though you'll use your putter 30+ times a round. Ok, so maybe this is how I justify buying an expensive putter, but hey, whatever makes you sleep better right?

So what did I pay for this toy..well this Scotty Cameron putter cost half of a brand new one. It probably didn't hurt that I'm left handed, and the market for used left-handed Scotty Cameron putters is not as good a right handed models, but I paid about $150 for it, in perfect condition.

When you look at this club, it's easy to think that it's just another replica of a Ping Anser style putter, and actually I was putting with an Anser 4, that was the identical shape of this Scotty Cameron putter...but what makes this Cameron so much better...I have to believe it's the materials and the construction. The milled face is so much sweeter than any Ping putter I've used. It's amazingly balanced and just fits my eye. I put an inch extension in the shaft and re-gripped it with one of the thicker Scotty Cameron grips...I have big hands so it's nice to have a bigger grip.

There are some really funky SC putters available, but I still prefer the more traditional shapes. I like to think that Tiger uses his Scotty because he heard how much success I had with mine...(riiiiiiiight!)

If you have a putter you love, then you know what I'm talking about here. It's just something that you can't explain, but it works. I never used to trust my putting, but I feel like I can make putts from all over the place with this one, and it's great to have that confidence. If you get a chance, try out a Scotty Cameron. They can be difficult to find in golf stores, but I think once you get to demo one, you'll be hooked...Then jump on Ebay and try to get yourself a good deal. :-)

Best Southern California Golf Courses

As most of you know by now, I was born and raised and currently live in Southern California, and let me tell you, there's no better place I know of where you can play golf year round, with some of the best golf courses you'll find. I live on a course, and I'm also a member of that club, but it's still my goal to play all the golf courses in Southern California...well at least a lot of them.

I would say that currently, my favorite Southern California golf course would be Torrey Pines. In my eyes, it has to be one of the best public courses in Southern California, and by far the best public course that hosts a PGA Tour event. The views are magnificent. The South Course is extremely challenging, and the price (if you live in SD) is only about $45 for 18 holes. If you are a golfing visitor to the San Diego area, you must try to get on at Torrey Pines. It will be worth the effort, even though tee times can be difficult to come by.

Next on my list would be La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California. This course used to host the PGA Mercedes Championship and the Accenture Matchplay Championship. This course is mostly private, however La Costa does offer stay and play packages but is pricey in the $200 a round range. Expensive as it is, the course is amazing. Exceptionally manicured and both courses are extremely challenging. The Tour events would play holes from both courses, and a few times a year, La Costa does the same setup for the rest of us, which is a real treat.

If you're traveling to San Diego and are bringing your clubs with you, be sure to check out some of these courses as well. Most are within 30 minutes driving distance from downtown San Diego, and I consider them to be some of the best golf courses in Southern California.

Barona Vallley Casino Golf Course - Lakeside, Southern California
Aviara Four Seasons Golf Course - Carlsbad, Southern California
El Camino Country Club - Oceanside, Southern California
Steele Canyon Golf Course - Jamul, Southern California
Red Hawk Golf Course - Temecula, Southern California (1.5 hours from SD)
Trump National Golf Course - Los Angeles, Southern California

I hope you enjoy this list of courses and are able to play at least one of them the nest time you're looking for a golf course here in Southern California. I'll try to post some Northern California golf courses here in the future, as there are many wonderful courses along the California coast including Pebble Beach in Monterey, California.

Fall is here..Time for a Myrtle Beach Golf Vacation

Even though I live in California, and we have golf year round here, I always look forward to this time of year to take a short golf vacation to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I'm sure those of you who live in cooler climates could also use a nice golf vacation to a warmer climate. Not only is the weather in Myrtle Beach still very nice thru October and November, but there are great deals to be had and Myrtle Beach has has the largest number of courses per square mile than anywhere else in the United States. It's a golfers mecca.

For those of you golfers out there who have never taken a golf vacation to Myrtle Beach, you don't know what you're missing. There are many great packages available for 3 day stays all the way up to 10 day packages which include golf at some of the premium courses, which are normally in the $150+ dollar range in the peak season.

Now I know this sounds like a sales pitch, but I have no affiliation with any of these courses or golf packages, I just wanted to pass along some information in case you're looking to take a golf vacation to Myrtle Beach this fall / winter season. I love it down there and hope to retire there someday. Here's a list of some of the best courses and places to stay in Myrtle. I hope you enjoy. I'll be back there in February too, so hopefully I'll see you there.

The Fall PGA tournaments bore me to tears...someone had to say it!

It's true...the fall leg of the PGA tour is like watching paint dry. Yeah, I know John Daly is making his third straight appearance in as many weeks at this weeks Valero Texas Open, but unless Big John pulls off a miracle, I don't even think there's a chance for him to get his card back for 2008. The highest ranking player on the money list playing this week is Steven "big teeth" Ames at 42nd. Don't get me wrong, Tiger doesn't have to be playing to keep me interested, but watching J.J. Henry and Justin Leonard battle it out in San Antonio isn't my idea of must watch television. I guess I'm just spoiled from seeing so much good, championship caliber golf at the end of the FedEx Cup matches. So when does the regular season start again?

The American Team wins the Presidents Cup

President's Cup Sunday Tee Times & Pairings

The United States leads the International Team going into Sunday by a score of 14.5 to 7.5.
The match to watch today will be Tiger Woods vs. Mike Weir.
The player Canadians love vs. their passion. And no, it's not contrived. Weir earned the right to play the best player in the world so it should be a good match. Good for the players. Good for the Cup. Good for Canadians. With Tiger still in top form, I'm not expecting Weir to devastate woods today, but it will at least be a fun match to watch. A win by Woods could clinch the overall win for the United States.
