Davis Love will be the 2012 Ryder Cup Captain

Davis Love III will be named captain of the 2012 U.S. Ryder Cup team early next year a source close to the situation has told GolfChannel.com.

The PGA of America’s board of directors met late last month to approve the move, which has been widely anticipated following the U.S. team’s loss in October.

Love, 46, has played in six matches and has a 9-12-5 overall record, but hasn’t been on the winning side of the biennial event since 1999. He also served as an assistant captain for this year’s event, which was won by the Europeans, 14 ½ to 13 ½. When contacted, Love referred all questions to the PGA of America.

“It’s our hope to announce the 2012 Ryder Cup captain in the first quarter sometime next year,” said Julius Mason, the PGA’s senior director of communications and media relations.

When asked about the possibility to captain his own team in 2012 at Medinah (Ill.) Country Club Love seemed to be clinging to the idea of playing one more match. But he realized that if he was asked to take the post, it’d be difficult to pass up the opportunity.

“I definitely want to be a captain,” Love said at the McGladrey Classic in October. “If they talk to me about it, I’ll be excited about it.”

The United Kingdom Press Association also reported on Thursday that Jose Maria Olazabal was expected to be named Europe’s captain for the ’12 matches. The Spaniard initially appeared reluctant to take the job because of health concerns – he has been battling rheumatic pain for more than a decade – but he has quickly become the favorite to land the 2012 job when it is announced Jan. 18 in Abu Dhabi.

Well, what ever happens, I hope the US plays better than last year. I think Tiger is going to rebound this year and hopefully make a significant contribution to the team this time. I believe we have the best golfers in the world here, and we have to step up and prove it.

As to me, I always believe in Tiger. When I was a school girl, I know this guy and he is really a magic. Best wishes to all of you who love golf.

The USA players must play better golf 2012 than they did 2010.

They didn’t play horrible. They lost on the last match by McDowell draining a couple of snakes. If only Phil had played well….
